To Die, To Sleep

To Die To Sleep Cover for KindleThe King died in California in 1992, in a castle built six miles from the ocean. His son, Zeb, saw it happen, saw outside his window the former King of rock and roll, now a bloated parody of himself, fully ablaze, staggering like a burning haystack with legs. Though his death was a good career move, occurring to a senior citizen who had outlived his youthful 1950-ish, rebel image, Seville’s death has a second act. Shortly after his burial, he appears as a ghost in front of Zeb and says he was set on fire not accidentally—as officially ruled—but deliberately, murdered by person or persons unknown. Oh, and Seville informs Zeb that if he doesn’t find in a short time the cassette tape where Seville made a drunken confession of his sins, the King will be subject to eternal perdition. So, who was Seville’s killer? His mother, remarkably stoic after her husband’s death, the conniving brother, the staff, or the band-mates who did better with a Seville imitator? Or maybe Seville’s own mother, who had hated his music, and though buried near the castle, is rumored to still walk the grounds? The King’s memorial concert is coming up, and Zeb is on the clock.

Carnival Night at the Crematorium

Carnival Night at the Crematorium is a roller coaster ride of suspense and psychological terror. Just like wandering through a seedy midway at an old carnival, you have no idea what you’ll run into or what bizarre twists your visit may take. These 21 pieces of weird fiction are each like a different attraction. Some are scary and some will cause you to ponder about life and the thin veil of death. Do you hear that? The barker is calling you to enter the next tent of wonders. Do you dare?

Verses from a deeply darkened mind

Verses mediumVERSES FROM A DEEPLY DARKENED MIND

Yes, “Deeply Darkened.” These are the words which reside within the depths of a mind haunted. A haunting, of neither the ethereal persuasion, nor the ghosts of a hidden and unrelenting past. Here before you, etched upon parchment, are verse written from a mind haunted by “words.” This tome is unlike your typical, modern day collection of “Horror Poetry.” It is rather an assemblage of “Horror Stories” written in poetic form. Written to tease that final nerve, before the fatal break. Ah, yes. Here, this “DEEPLY DARKENED MIND,” who with pen in hand (black ink a must), has taken meter and rhyme to send a heartbeat racing in terror from one page to the next. “DEEPLY DARKENED,” is my mind, my world; and I offer you entrance. That’s right… Turn my page… Crack my spine… I want you to cringe, squirm, look over your shoulder into the shadows and dare you to shut out the lights once this cover has been closed. This “DEEPLY DARKENED MIND,” bids you “welcome.” Yes, join me… in my darkness…

Soal Man

soalman mediumThe justice system in the city of Sachter is broken. Teenage punks with big guns, small minds and no ambition roam about the darkest neighborhoods in search of prey. They fuel their anger with codeine-soaked joints and cheap liquor and finance their habits through theft, extortion, arson, and murder. Enter Romeo Soal, a loner who has vowed to give his ravaged city a jump-start. Working just outside the crumbling edges of the legal system, Soal takes on child molesters, dope dealers, deadbeat dads, and repeat offenders who have slithered through the cracks in the courthouse steps. Soal does his best to help those in need, but when P. Anderton Hillis, a wealthy businessman, asks him to murder his wife, Soal flatly refuses. Hillis is not accustomed to being told “no,” and is determined to do anything to get his way, including kidnapping Soal’s best friend, Nick Finch. While trying to rescue Finch, Soal must endure beatings, avoid police and stop an arsonist who has turned pyromania into an art form, all while struggling with his infatuation for Hillis’ personal secretary.

The Vampires of Dreach Fola

The Vampires of Drea medium'The Vampire genre of ‘speculative fiction’ was long overdue for a new vision, a new perspective, and a real kick in the ass. Few vampire tales choose to portray the creatures as powerful, savage, and complicated, despite their obvious attributes, which declare them as such. Many writers have made vampires powerful, but mostly to comic, romantic, or just plain ‘fan boy’ effect. Fewer writers have depicted them as savage beasts. Then, writers who choose to portray these creatures as calculated or aristocratic always lose the two traits of power and savagery. In Dracula, the brutality was primarily implied until the latter scenes, and even then, we could imagine far more than was shown. In this way Bram Stoker set the ‘vampire template’ to perfection, and artists have been trying and failing to match it ever since. That being said, when I read The Vampires of Dreach Fola, I got that certain feeling again—the sense that we are dealing with a very powerful and driven, savage aristocracy that exists in a way we cannot understand or experience. Not since Charles Williams, and Stoker before him, and Dante before him, has horror fiction of this depth and caliber been written. Scáth Beorh takes us on a journey many readers will deeply regret, the terror is so debilitating, the escape so narrow. Be warned. This is not reading you should undertake before bedtime... unless, of course, you can outwit your own nightmares.’

Darker Tales from the Den

Dona Fox - Darker tales from the den

DarkerTalesmediumSeventeen darker tales. Stories of death, ghosts, and wicked delusions. Poisons, secrets, and lovers from the past. Murders by curse, serpents’ fangs, herbs, and flowers. The discovery of crystal bones, the smell of singed gossamer wings, the sound of a wooden puppet dancing in the dark and the touch of a cold hand beneath the grave. Includes the novella "CHRYSTAL BONES AND GOSSAMER WINGS."

"Dona Fox had me with her first story, 'Smoky Martini.' Creepy and atmospheric, it sets the stage for Dark Tales from the Den, her new collection of shorts. My favorites, along with 'Smoky Martini,' were 'Crawlspace'--suitably claustrophobic and disturbing--and the devastating 'Grace at the End.' Fox shows her deft hand for creating atmosphere and mood in these 18 shorts. Very much recommended!-

John F.D. Taff, Bram Stoker-Nominated Author of The End in All Beginnings.
